We’ve all seen it; a photograph of our favourite musician against a stark white backdrop, busy doing something completely normal, for once. The portraits shot by Liam Lynch have become synonymous with the rock culture of South Africa and its youth who grew up in direct proportion to it.

The tattooed red-haired skinny man had an Instamatic as a kid that apparently “never really interested” him. While studying Journalism at TUT [then Pretoria Technikon] as a 20-year-old laaitie, he used a borrowed camera to photograph student riots. His work would soon appear on every front page in the country. A few months later, while almost getting shot in the face with a rubber bullet, he got an image into the New York Times. “I still have that rubber bullet casing. Although I’d rather have the Instamatic.”

Apart from being deep, Liam does commissioned work for major brands such as Red Bull, Nike and Levi’s. He has toured Europe with Fokofpolisiekar, the photos of which would go on to make up the music video for “Ek Skyn (Heilig)”. He has done many shoots on many local projects, and his last exhibition was in Paris in 2013.
